‘Then you are a fool, Merlin.’ Arthur’s voice was cruel. ‘You
cannot trust a single word a sorcerer says, You would do
well to remember that.’
Merlin looked at the prince sadly, hurt by the venom in
his friend’s voice. He had hoped that one day he would be
able to reveal his special gifts, to show Arthur that not
all sorcerers were set on destruction and evil, to show
him how wonderful magic could be. Seeing the anger and fear
in the prince’s face, however, made Merlin realize how far
away that day still was, how careful he had to be as long
as he lived inside the castle of Uther Pendragon. Servant
and friend to the heir to the throne or not, if Uther ever
discovered what he was capable of, then he doubted that
Camelot would ever see a faster execution.
